Ganglion Cyst

Removal for Unsightly and Painful Ganglion Cysts

A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous lump that typically forms near the joints or tendons of the wrists, hands, or feet. These cysts are filled with a jelly-like fluid and can vary in size. Ganglion cysts are often painless, but they can cause discomfort or limited mobility if they press on nearby nerves or interfere with joint movement.

Treatment options for ganglion cysts include:

  1. Observation: In some cases, ganglion cysts may not cause any symptoms and can be left alone. If the cyst is not causing pain or functional problems, a "wait-and-see" approach may be recommended.
  2. Immobilization: Wearing a wrist splint or brace can help reduce movement of the affected joint and alleviate discomfort.
  3. Aspiration: A needle and syringe is used to drain the fluid from the cyst. This procedure may provide temporary relief, but cysts often return.
  4. Corticosteroid Injection: After aspiration, a corticosteroid injection may be administered into the cyst to reduce inflammation and decrease the likelihood of recurrence.
  5. Surgery (Ganglion Cyst Excision): When conservative treatments are ineffective, cause pain, or if the cyst returns, surgery may be recommended. During the procedure, the cyst, along with its stalk or connection to the joint or tendon, is removed. This can be done using traditional open surgery or arthroscopically (with a small camera and instruments inserted through small incisions).
  6. Hydrodissection: A newer technique involves injecting a high-pressure saline solution into the cyst to collapse it. This can be performed as an outpatient procedure and may be less invasive than traditional surgery.

After surgery, it's common to wear a splint or brace for a brief period to protect the area as it heals. Recovery time varies, but most people can resume normal activities within a few weeks to a few months.

The choice of treatment depends on the size and location of the cyst, as well as the level of discomfort and interference with joint function. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sunishka Wimalawansa will help determine the most suitable treatment option for an individual's specific case.
