Carpal Tunnel

Find Relief for Tingling and Weakness in Your Hand with Treatment from our Carpal Tunnel Specialist

If you're experiencing numbness, tingling, and weakness in your hand, it may be due to carpal tunnel syndrome. Left untreated, the condition may get worse over time and can eventually interfere with such basic activities as holding the steering wheel or a glass of water.

Treatment options for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) aim to alleviate symptoms and improve hand and wrist function. Bracing or splinting is often one of the initial approaches, which involves wearing a wrist brace or splint at night to keep the wrist in a neutral position, reducing pressure on the median nerve. This can help relieve mild to moderate symptoms.

Injections of corticosteroids into the carpal tunnel can provide temporary relief from pain and inflammation, but the effects may wear off over time, necessitating repeat injections. For more severe or persistent cases, carpal tunnel release surgery may be recommended. During this procedure, a surgeon cuts the transverse carpal ligament to enlarge the carpal tunnel, reducing pressure on the median nerve. While surgery can provide long-term relief, it involves a recovery period and potential risks. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of CTS, individual factors, and the recommendation of a healthcare provider.

FAQs for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The carpal tunnel is a fairly narrow passage in your wrist that opens between your forearm and your hand and fingers. The median nerve from your forearm travels through this tunnel and provides sensation to the palm side of your thumb and first three fingers.

It also carries nerve signals from your brain that tell your muscles to move.

Along with the median nerve, nine tendons also run through the carpal tunnel and help you manipulate your fingers. When the median nerve undergoes pressure in the carpal tunnel, you can experience numbness, tingling, and weakness.

  • What Are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome usually start gradually and get worse as time passes.

    • Numbness or tingling in your thumb and index, middle, and ring fingers. Initially, the symptoms may come and go but may become persistent
    • Discomfort in your wrist and your palm
    • Numbness, tingling, and electrical shock sensations that can travel from your wrist up your arm - often while you’re holding a steering wheel, phone, or book
    • Numbness and tingling in your hands that wakes you from sleep
    • Weakness in your hand that may eventually cause you to drop objects
  • What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome may develop from any action or condition that presses or irritates the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. For instance, a wrist fracture can narrow the tunnel or arthritis can cause swelling and inflammation in your wrist.

Women appear to be much more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome than men, and other issues also may have an effect.

    • Illnesses known to cause nerve damage, such as diabetes
    • Fluid retention during pregnancy and menopause
    • Thyroid disorders, kidney failure, and other serious medical conditions may also increase your chances of developing carpal tunnel syndrome
    • Workplace activities, including work with vibrating tools or any activity that requires prolonged or repetitive flexing of the wrist, such as painting
